DENVER (CBS4)– Denver police are investigating a deadly shooting at a home near the intersection of Winona Court and Floyd Avenue. The man who pulled the trigger is a former police officer.
Neighbor Paula Gutierrez-Esquibel says she woke up Friday morning to find investigators had overrun her neighborhood.
“Everything was taped off and the cops were there,” Gutierrez-Esquibel said.
Just before 2 a.m. Friday police responded to a call of what they say was a prowler who forced his way into a home. The owner, Jason Morrill told CBS4 that he is a former cop but declined to discuss the case any further.
According to communication by dispatchers who took the 911 call, Morrill armed himself and put on a tactical vest for protection.
Denver police spokesperson Raquel Lopez says when officers arrived they found the suspected prowler with a gunshot wound. He died at the scene.
“We did question the individuals that were inside the residence and at this time we do not have anyone under arrest,” Lopez said.
The name of the person who died has not been released.
Whether or not this case falls under Colorado’s “Make My Day” law will be decided by the Denver District Attorney’s office once the investigation is complete.
